After the wedding
Name change after marriage: complete checklist.
The real order matters — every agency below verifies against the one before it. Start with certified marriage certificates, then Social Security, then everything else. Nothing here is legal advice; it's the procedural path most couples follow.
Your state (DMV and certificate guidance)
- Order from the county clerk (or town clerk / register of deeds) that issued your license.
- Certified copies have a raised seal or colored stamp; a photocopy will not work.
- Most offices ship in 2–4 weeks; expedited options exist for a fee.
- Keep two copies at home, mail one, and carry one when you visit the DMV or Social Security office.
Questions people ask
- In what order should I change my name?
- Certified certificate → Social Security → DMV → passport → banks → employer → insurance → voter → subscriptions. Downstream agencies check the SSA record, so SSA must go before the DMV.
- How long does the whole process take?
- Four to eight weeks end-to-end. Certified certificates arrive in 2–4 weeks, Social Security in about two, and everything else fits around them.
- Do I have to change my name legally?
- No. Plenty of couples keep, hyphenate, or use both names professionally and socially. This checklist only applies if you're doing a legal change.
- How many certified certificates should I order?
- Four to six. SSA, DMV, and passport each want an original, and spares save a return trip to the county clerk.
